Copart Auction Fees: What Every Buyer Needs to Know
Copart auctions charge five main fee categories on top of your winning bid. For a $3,000 bid as an individual online buyer, total auction fees come to approximately $1,093.00, making your all-in cost around $4,093.00. Understanding each category before you bid is the best way to avoid surprises at checkout.

All Copart Auction Fee Categories
Every Copart invoice includes some combination of the following charges. The first four are applied by Copart directly. The fifth category consists of external costs that buyers are responsible for but that Copart does not set.
1. Buyer Fee
The buyer fee is the largest variable charge and is tiered based on your winning bid amount. Individual (public) buyers pay more than licensed business buyers at every tier. For example, a $3,000 bid carries an individual buyer fee of $850.00. Business buyers at the same price point pay significantly less. The buyer fee is non-negotiable and applies to every purchase regardless of how you bid.
2. Internet Bid Fee
If you bid online rather than attending a live auction in person, Copart charges an internet bid fee. This fee ranges from $0 on the smallest bids to $129 for bids of $8,000 or more. For a $3,000 bid, the internet fee is $89.00. Attending a live auction eliminates this charge entirely, which is one of the simplest ways to reduce your total cost.
3. Gate Fee
Every vehicle pickup requires a gate fee of $95.00. This is a flat charge that does not vary with the bid amount, buyer type, or auction method. Whether you win a $100 beater or a $20,000 luxury car, the gate fee is always the same.
4. Additional Fees
Copart bundles several smaller charges into an additional fees line item of approximately $59.00. This covers environmental handling, basic vehicle services, and document mailing. Like the gate fee, this amount is relatively consistent across transactions.
5. External Costs to Budget For
Beyond the four Copart charges above, buyers should plan for several costs that are not set by Copart but can significantly increase your total:
- Sales tax — varies by state and vehicle price
- Shipping and transportation — cost to move the vehicle from the yard to your location
- Storage fees — charged per day if you do not pick up the vehicle within the free window
- Late payment fees — penalties if payment is not received by the deadline
- Broker fees — if you use a third-party broker to bid on your behalf
Typical Total Auction Fees at Common Bid Amounts
The table below shows the four Copart-levied fees for an individual online buyer at four common bid amounts. These figures use the current public fee schedule.
| Winning Bid | Buyer Fee | Internet Fee | Gate Fee | Additional | Total Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500.00 | $235.00 | $49.00 | $95.00 | $59.00 | $938.00 |
| $2,000.00 | $750.00 | $89.00 | $95.00 | $59.00 | $2,993.00 |
| $5,000.00 | $950.00 | $99.00 | $95.00 | $59.00 | $6,203.00 |
| $10,000.00 | $1,500.00 | $129.00 | $95.00 | $59.00 | $11,783.00 |
Notice how the total auction fees as a percentage of the winning bid decrease at higher price points. At $500, fees represent roughly 88% of the bid. At $10,000, they drop to about 18%. This makes higher-value purchases proportionally more efficient in terms of overhead.
How Auction Fees Compare: Individual vs Business
The single biggest factor affecting your total fees is your buyer type. Licensed business buyers — dealers, dismantlers, rebuilders, and exporters — pay substantially lower buyer fees. At a $5,000 bid, an individual online buyer pays $6,203.00 all-in, while a business buyer at the same price pays $6,003.00. That is a difference of $200.00, most of which comes from the lower buyer fee tier.
Business buyers also benefit from simpler fee schedules with fewer tiers, making costs more predictable. If you buy vehicles frequently, investing in a business license can pay for itself within a few purchases.
How to Reduce Your Auction Fees
While Copart's fee schedule is fixed, there are concrete steps you can take to lower your total:
- Bid live at the auction yard. Attending in person eliminates the internet bid fee entirely. On a $5,000 bid, that saves you $99.00. For buyers located near a Copart yard, this can be the easiest saving available.
- Register as a business buyer. If you qualify for a dealer, dismantler, rebuilder, or exporter license, the reduced buyer fee tiers will save you hundreds or thousands of dollars per vehicle. The savings compound quickly if you buy multiple vehicles per year.
- Pick up your vehicle quickly. Copart provides a limited free storage window after purchase. Once it expires, daily storage fees accumulate rapidly. Arrange transport in advance and retrieve your vehicle as soon as possible after payment clears.
